Gemini, Mercury, Kabbalah, and Your Throat Chakra

Gemini, Mercury, Kabbalah, and Your Throat Chakra

Written By Shawn Engel

The warmth of summer is approaching! We can feel the earth heating up, and with it comes more energy, higher spirits, and, perhaps, more optimism?

Gemini is the third sign in the zodiac, denoted by the twins, which signifies duality. Highlighting the sector of communication, Gemini is not afraid to speak it’s mind, and this type of energy is felt all throughout the zodiac. As an Air sign, Gemini season is all about connection and bridging energetic gaps. Being ruled by chatty Mercury, we’re doing so by networking, building friendships, and just plain talking! It is time for us to elevate our goals by speaking them loudly, but also putting our money where our mouth is.

Ruling the 3rd house, Gemini asks us to take the physical values we’ve attained in Taurus season and attribute even more value by growing our network around it. This season asks us to bring in friends, family, and others to help make our possessions actually worth something. With their Tarot card being The Lovers, we are called into seeking harmonious relationships with a dual nature; one that feeds and one that is fed. The roles interchangeably exist, but they always exist together.

As the twins that tie an end to the spring, Gemini's mutable quality is quite fitting. Finishing a harmonious season with a new sense of perspective helps us to begin summer as a more well rounded being.

Mercury

Mercury has become quite a notorious planet in popular culture, with its frequent and bothersome retrograde period. However, this planet can tell us a lot about how we relate to others.

Mercury is the communication planet, and wherever it lies in your chart shows exactly what type of energy you use to get your point across. For example, a Scorpio Mercury would have an air of mystery around the way they speak, but would also value secrets bestowed to them by others.

The planet’s relative God, Mercury, is the deity of shopkeepers and merchants, travelers and transporters of goods, and thieves and tricksters, also known as the Greek Hermes. This perfectly embodies the Gemini archetype, because while they are incredible networkers and oh so delightfully charming, they can also (on their shadow side) be manipulative, gossipy, and present an inauthentic sense of self.

Both the planet and the God bring this sense of duality to the table, because where there is chatter, there is a motive behind it. Will you use it with pure intent? Or a malicious one?

Chesed and Geburah

To explain Chesed and Geburah,  one must already be familiar with Kabballaistic teachings. This is a sect of Judaism that is mystical and full of ancient Hebrew magick, and one of the most important pillars in it is the Tree of Life.

The Tree of Life is set up on the human form, with energetic points all linking about the body. It’s almost as if you took the chakra system (which we’ll get to in a minute) and expanded it outward to include the arms and legs. Now, interestingly, Gemini (anatomically) rules the arms, of which the two points Chesed and Geburah are placed, and the line that goes across and links these two points passes by the throat.

Further, Chesed, on one arm, means “Mercy”, and Geburah, on the other, means “Severity,” and when passing through the throat, it very adequately describes both the power of words and the dual nature of Gemini’s potential.

What is illustrated here is the magnitude and ability of a pendulum that swings in the appropriate direction. One must choose exactly how to communicate in order to achieve a goal, but at what cost?

Your Throat Chakra

Those that are familiar with the chakra system already know this, but your throat chakra lies, well, at your throat, and vibrates to the color blue.

A block in this energy center could lead to an inability to speak your truth, and an overactive throat chakra can have you spilling the beans about everyone else's business. The goal is to have balance, so you can retain control of how you communicate.

When we understand our own personal power, we are able to be accountable for it. And in this way, balancing our energy centers becomes more of an act of self care than “woo woo.” It becomes like brushing our teeth so we don’t whisper in someone's ear with garlic breath.

Your throat chakra may be overactive or underactive for a variety of reasons, some even stemming from the state of other chakras. But once you try to wrangle this one, you can move to the deeper issue at hand.

Speaking Your Truth

For this ritual, we are going to speak freely and clearly, and communicate our desires in a balanced and accountable way.

What you’ll need:

  • Cleansing tool of choice (bells, smoke, etc.)
  • A bowl of water
  • A pendulum
  • A pen and paper

How to perform:

  1. First, clear the area in which you’re performing your ritual. This will help give you balanced energy in which to work.
  2. Take your pendulum to your throat and note its activity. If it swings wildly, your throat chakra is very open. If it barely swings, it is closed. If it swings at a moderate pace, it is balanced.
  3. Close your eyes and first envision a blue light emanating from your throat chakra. Imagine it as the size of your fist, shrinking or growing it accordingly.
  4. Next, imagine a white light on both of your shoulders, linking to your throat chakra.
  5. When you feel balanced, come out of your meditative state and take your pen and paper.
  6. Write down an issue that has been on your mind, and underneath, make two columns, one titled Mercy, and one titled Severity.
  7. Journal underneath each column how you would take each approach.
  8. When you are finished, go back into your meditation, and ask your higher self which choice is the most appropriate.
  9. When the answer comes to you, speak it into your bowl of water.
  10. Thank Mercury and close your ritual.

You always have the power within you to choose Chesed or Geburah. Choose wisely and with a balanced energy.

That was a great read!! Can’t wait to perform the ritual! However, I’m a bit new to magick, and I’m wondering what kind of pendulum to use/where to find a good one. Any pointers?
